We’re told that reason brought us out of superstition and darkness and into the glorious light of enlightenment.
Reason also led us to the conclusion that there is no such thing as truth. Or, truth is relative. Or, truth is different for every one; imperfectly accessible, ot whatever.
Jesus said: If the light that is in you is darkness, then dark is your darkness indeed.
OUR INHERITANCE FROM THE ENLIGHTENMENT includes at least modern ‘virtues:’ 1) Reason, 2) Tolerance, and 3) Individualism.
I learned somewhere along the way that these brought us out of the darkness, superstition, and tribalism of the preceding age. This is what we have been programmed to call “progress.”
Yet, I wonder. Are we really all that enlightened? Do we really practice the ‘virtues’ to which our lips recite pre-programmed praise?
